Spiritual Abuse and How to Avoid It

da

Even in the early church there was spiritual abuse, crimes committed by  those who lorded over the flock, demanding that the Lord’s flock listen to them and them alone.

In Christendom today, whether in organized religious gatherings, churches, WordPress, Facebook, Christian TV, etc., we pretty much see the same thing going on in regard to these various and sundry “teachers and preachers, et al”,  and whether they are willing to come right out and admit it or not, usually believe that they only have the word of truth.

“Galatians who lived through those confusing times, would have heard different voices saying:  “Follow me.  No, follow me!  believe and do what I tell you!  No!  believe and do what I tell you!”…  While those very voices would have been those of this church leader over here, and of that other church leader over there.  Or of this teacher over here, or of that teacher over there. And that is why Paul was asked to intervene by writing and then by going back to the Churches in Galatia”.

Something is wrong with this picture brethren. What is wrong with Christians that they must run to a man to teach them the things of God? Or, that they, having itching ears, have a desire to heap together many such teachers, and are then blown about by every wind of doctrine in total confusion, like silly women, learning, learning, and never coming to a knowledge of the truth. This is confusion, and we know that confusion is not of God.

Christians surely must know by the sacred scriptures that the Lord has given us all things freely, that pertain to life and godliness. We have not been left as orphans, but Jesus has sent the Holy Spirit; He has sent His Word to instruct us.

Be  not led about by any man, but turn to Jesus, not second hand, and perhaps very deceptive scriptural information. Turn to studying His Word. Be His disciple. Be led by His Spirit. And then you may come to know the truth that sets you free. Not by following man, and His doctrine. Make sure that you are following Jesus Doctrine.

This is how we keep from being spiritually abused by others.

Spiritual abuse hurts! If you feel you are in a church, or fellowship setting, and have or are being spiritually abused…..Just leave! Just get out. The sooner or better. The Lord does not want his people to be controlled, manipulated or otherwise abused.

I have been told that in this day and age the role of watchman as understood in the Old Testament has been done away with, that it is not necessary because we are not under the wrath of God but under grace through Jesus Christ. If there are watchmen today, I am told, they cannot be held to the same degree of accountability that God required of Ezekiel. If there are watchmen today as described in Ezekiel, who are these watchmen? And after examining the following from Ezekiel 33, who would ever want to be put in this position?

The Watchman’s Duty: Ezekiel 33

“And the word of the LORD came to me, saying, ‘Son of man, speak to the sons of your people and say to them,

‘If I bring a sword upon a land, and the people of the land take one man from among them and make him their watchman, and he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows on the trumpet and warns the people, then he who hears the sound of the trumpet and does not take warning, and a sword comes and takes him away, his blood will be on his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet but did not take warning; his blood will be on himself.  But had he taken warning, he would have delivered his life.

“But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet and the people are not warned, and a sword comes and takes a person from them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require from the watchman’s hand.’

“Now as for you, son of man, I have appointed you a watchman for the house of Israel; so you will hear a message from My mouth and give them warning from Me.  When I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require from your hand. But if you on your part warn a wicked man to turn from his way and he does not turn from his way, he will die in his iniquity, but you have delivered your life. ” Ezekiel 33:1-9

If we look closely in chapter 20 in the book of Acts we see that the Apostle Paul understood this mandate even as he warned the overseers in Ephesus concerning his departure after being with them for three years. Here is one example clearly stated:

“I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of all men. For I did not shrink from declaring to you the whole purpose of God. Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.     “I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be on the alert (watch), remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears.” Acts 20:26-31  (also see Acts 18:6)

One could say that this was an Apostolic responsibility that was not passed on to us but if we look in Hebrews we see that the overseers were exhorted by its writer to look out for the sheep, to guard and warn them as watching over the flock:

“Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.” Hebrews 13:17

In Mark, chapter 13, we see that Jesus is telling us of the things to come regarding the Last Days. He exhorts us all to be on the alert, to be watchful of the things to come. It seems we have all been called to be in a constant state of watchfulness in some capacity as believers in Christ:

Take heed, keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time will come. It is like a man away on a journey, who upon leaving his house and putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay on the alert.        “Therefore, be on the alert — for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning — in case he should come suddenly and find you asleep.        “What I say to you I say to all, ‘Be on the alert!'” Mark 13:33-37

Why am I asking these questions or why am I even concerned that anyone is at watch for the body of Christ?

As Paul states in Acts 20:28-31, there has been through the centuries and still continues to this day, to be many savage wolves coming into the flock and also rising up from within to deceive and steal away disciples after themselves. I would hope this is not a surprise to anyone but sadly, I must report, this is probably the state of many churches everywhere.
Just testifying of my own experience, over the last 10 years, I have visited dozens of churches that have had an ‘open door’ policy, accepting whatever doctrine or new teaching that comes through the door. Unlike the words of Paul in Ephesians 4, about those who should be watching and equipping the saints, to bring us to maturity, not being tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine, they in fact willingly open their sails to allow any wind to blow them about. I have witnessed many in leadership, whether pastor, elders or overseers who have no clue to what has come through their doors or is about to come upon them as we look to the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. No one is guarding the flock as the wolf moves silently about looking for those he can devour.
As I was wondering what has happened to those called to watch over the flocks, in whatever capacity that they serve, I thought of a little Mother Goose nursery rhyme about Little Boy Blue and how appropriate this is for today’s churches:

Little Boy Blue, come blow your horn. The sheep’s in the meadow, the cow’s in the corn. Where is the boy that looks after the sheep? “He’s under the haycock, fast asleep.” Will you wake him? “No, not I; For if I do, he’ll be sure to cry.”  (Emphasis mine)

Somebody please wake the watchmen! I would rather have sadness and grief with much tears, bringing us to repentance, than to continue to see the churches being infiltrated and assimilated by New Age Occultism, false teaching, heresies, philosophies of men and doctrines of demons as the watchmen sleep.
I have written this before and it has happened again just recently. I was asked which church I would recommend for a new Christian to begin fellowship. As a Christian of more than 30 years, and after visiting dozens of churches locally, I could not think of any church where I would send this person without knowing that they would in some way be caught up in the current trends of deception that are sweeping through the body of Christ. This is related to the lack of discernment being used by the leadership that are asleep.
Steven Mitchell writes in his article “Watchman Arise,”

“Since God mentions this ministry several times throughout the Bible with great clarity, we do well to read, heed, and learn to be men and women with this attitude for the church today. While we may not be under the threat of physical invasion today, or living in literal walled fortresses, Satan and his workers seek to destroy and lay siege to the church today through false teachers and ungodly philosophies. He seeks to lead us into false forms of worship and unbiblical teachings that masquerade as truth. He has engineered and orchestrated a full-out assault on the people of God today, complete with deceptive false ministers and non-prophets who no longer view His Word as the primary basis for true doctrine. The church is definitely under attack and, therefore, definitely and desperately in need of watchmen in this age.”

Most of what I have written addresses those in leadership that are asleep or unaware of the dangers that lie in wait. There are also churches that I have been to that the leadership is knowingly allowing and teaching deception with little concern for the flock thus fitting the example of Scripture from Acts 20.
Pastors, elders, overseers, shepherds and watchmen; please heed this call to awaken and warn the flock of the dangers that face your churches today. You are responsible and accountable if you do not warn them! Their blood will be on your hands!

Reiki is Not of God

burned books

New Christian believers repenting and throwing their magic books into the fire!

Well, I’ve been getting nasty comments from Reiki practitioners again, so I guess it’s time to update my thoughts on Reiki. For all of you who have come to this blog to lambast me for saying anything negative about Reiki, I would just say to you, “been there, done that”. I’ve been through the New Age scenario. It’s not like I don’t know what I’m talking about….. I’ve been into the “healing arts” and ” false laying on of hands”, and I can tell you honestly, it’s a dead end road that leads you away from truth, away from Jesus and straight to hell if not repented of.

Mind you, I am not saying anything against you personally, because that’s between you and God….but I am taking a stand against Reiki and it’s practice.  As a previous New Ager, who thought New Age and all it’s various modalities and venues,   was “cool”. But when Jesus came into my life, and I was born again spiritually and supernaturally by the power of God, I became awakened, aware and warned, that New Age beliefs such as reincarnation, following after occult practices, Yoga, channeling, mediums, psychics, various New Age “healing modalities”, not based on Biblical principles, are definitely not from God, nor are they “cool”, but instead,  very dangerous.

So, why would these false beliefs be dangerous? Because they are deceitful- and doctrines of devils, of which the bible says to beware.. They can indeed introduce demonic influences into the lives to those who practice them.

Friends, we can’t serve two masters. What does that mean? Well, either we are going to be inclined to serve Jesus Christ…or…the god of this world, Satan. We can’t have it both ways.

John 14:6

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father (God), except through me.”

Acts 19:18-20

18 “And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds. 19 Also, many of those who had practiced magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totaled fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.”

New Age, Reiki, Yoga, etc. Is nothing more than a form of witchcraft. Those of whom the Book of Acts is speaking of, had repented of their practices after having believing in Jesus and confessing their sins, and then turned away from their occultic practices.

http://settingcaptivesfree.me/tag/reiki/ This is a powerful testimony from Pam Shephard about her deliverance and journey from the occult false “healing ministry” into the truthful liberty and power of Jesus Christ.

Admin note: I am still getting many inquiries and search terms on the subject of Reiki, indicating this spiritually seductive deception is gaining disciples. Remember, Satan comes as an angel of light with all manner of lying signs and wonders. That includes Reiki! That said, I’m including this link to a post I just made on the real healing of God, no if’s, and’s, but’s, or false teachings. This would apply to anyone who can get ahold of the simple truths of God. It works!

God is Not the God of Denominations!

worship canceled

“For there are times and seasons in this earth that are of Me. Now is the time to see that your heart is dedicated completely, totally, to the ways of the Lord. Now is the time to see that you are completely focused on the ways of God and not the ways of the world.

This is the time I am bringing a correction to My church. This is the time I am bringing a correction to My church. This is the time I am bringing a correction to My church. And those who are caught up in denominations I will change. They will either have to turn from Me and serve the denomination, or turn from the denomination and serve Me.

For I do not serve a split-up church. I serve a church in one faith. Did I not say so in the Word: one faith. And I serve a people of one faith who are not arguing with denominational differences which make no matter to Me.

I seek not whether your doctrine is technically accurate or not. My main concern, says the Lord, is that you have your heart turned on to Me, and to My ways, and to My Word.

When I see that, I can take anything and change it. Look at Saul. Look at Saul, before he became the apostle Paul. He persecuted the christians because his heart was dedicated to the things of God, and he thought the christians were wrong. But I took that man and I changed him. I looked at the heart of Saul. The heart of Saul wanted truth. He just did not know what it was. He had it all mixed up. He had it backwards. But I took the apostle Saul, and I made him exactly that, an apostle; renamed him Paul, and had him write a large part of My Word.

Why is it you cannot see this? It is the heart dedicated to the things of God that count—to the things of the Son, and to the things of the Spirit. This is what I need. This is what I want. This is what My hearts desire is.

If you are a little inaccurate in one thing, or one belief, or one other little thing because you don’t understand something, I will correct it. I will show you truth. But I need your heart dedicated to Me. Not sitting down in some corner church arguing why you are right over some other corner church.

For those who fight against Me will loose. For when christians fight against christians they shall loose!

Beware of those who are always trying to win some theological argument. I’m not into that! I’m not into that, says the Lord of Heaven and earth! I’m not into that!

I’m into service—heart dedication. I’ll correct your errors, but you see that your heart is to Me, says the Lord God of all!”

Evil Surmisings

who are you to judge

Have you ever been evil spoken of, slandered, gossiped about, or falsely accused? Have you ever had someone assume something about you that you knew wasn’t true? Someone in church? Or perhaps a friend, or even a relative?  You can probably call to mind a number of instances. Most of us can.

This brings to mind, Psalm 41, and indicates a Messianic Psalm wherein Judas betrayed Jesus; “”Mine enemies speak evil of me, When shall he die, and his name perish? And if he come to see me, he speaketh vanity: his heart gathereth iniquity to itself; when he goeth abroad, he telleth it. All that hate me whisper together against me: against me do they devise my hurt.An evil disease, say they, cleaveth fast unto him: and now that he lieth he shall rise up no more. Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.”

If you’ve had these evil surmisings leveled at you, then it should behoove you not to do the same toward your brothers and sisters in the LORD if what you are thinking or speculating about are merely surmising, speculation…or, the imaginations coming from your own heart.

Evil Surmisings — Enemy Of Unity  By A. E. Reinschmidt

“Evil surmisings are carnal speculations which come of listening to “the serpent,” who is always accusing someone to someone else. He is called, “the accuser of the brethren” (Revelation 12:10).

Surmising, because it is purely speculative, is never from God. He never speculates; He knows. Surmising is evil because its source is the devil, the accuser of the brethren, and the accuser of God as well. Its source being the lying serpent, it could be nothing but evil. Surmising is having “fellowship with the works of darkness” (Ephesians 5:11), and communion with the devil and his angels.

However, not all surmisings come directly from the devil. Our fallen evil nature surmises things which are evil enough. “For from within, out of the heart of men proceed evil thoughts….all these evil things come from within, and defile the man” (Mark 7:21-23). “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9). Evil surmisings will proceed from our hearts until the Lord shall create in us a clean heart and renew a right spirit within us.

The purpose of surmising is to exalt ourself, by depreciating the status of others. It will even malign the character of God. The purpose behind surmising is to make things look bad for someone by misrepresentation. This is what the serpent did in the first instance of evil surmising of which we have any record: He made things look bad for God in the eyes of “the woman.” Satan insinuated that God had lied to man, and that He had an ulterior motive in His commandment prohibiting them from eating of the fruit of “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil” (Genesis 2:17).

When man believed the serpent’s word instead of the word of the Lord, and did accordingly, he put the devil and himself in God’s place. He put the devil’s lie in the place of God’s truth. It cost man his spiritual life, his kingdom, his garden and his fellowship with God. The purpose behind surmising is to slander someone else, misrepresent, break down confidence, cause division. This is what it did between man and his Creator, and between man and man.

One who has the habit of surmising about others is the victim of a colossal conceit. He sets himself up as a judge in the place of God–above and independent of God. He judges everybody’s matters, and proudly makes unfair comparisons between himself and every person whom he surmises about. He even sits in judgment on the acts of God Himself, as did the serpent and the woman in the garden. He will speculate about many things which God alone could know, and he never suspects the devilish conceit that prompts him in it all.

The Fruit Of Surmising

Surmising takes the place of faith in our hearts. It takes the place of God’s word, just as it did in the beginning. It opens the hearts of millions to the lie of the serpent, just as it opened Eve’s heart to the slander of the serpent against God.

Surmising takes the place of the spirit “of power and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). It takes the place of peace, and the unity of the Spirit. It takes the place of that kind of agreement between two persons which would, all things being equal, enhance their prayer power, so that “as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of My Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 18:19).

Surmising wrong things about one another is general and common among us Christians. Surmising, suspicion and distrust of one another, envy, jealousy, coldness, unforgiveness and the like, hinder revival greatly in many places.

The Cure

Being “born again” ought to make us “love the brethren” (1 John 3:14) and lay aside “all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings” (1 Peter 2:1). Then if there are any such things left in us, surely sanctification (1 Thessalonians 5:23) ought to cure us of them. And what about the “baptism with the Holy Ghost,” which many profess? Should a man profess to have such an experience while he has an unbridled tongue in his head? (James 3:2).

Of old, the Lord complained that the hurt of His people had been only “slightly” healed (Jeremiah 6:14). Perhaps we, with all our profession of the new birth, of sanctification, of the baptism with the Spirit–have spent too little time at the altar of repentance. Perhaps we thought it was a once-for-all matter! Most of us never stayed there long enough to get even a glimpse of what submission means (James 4:6-7; Ephesians 5:21).

God has no more control over our hearts and minds and tongues than we have given Him by submitting to His word, His will and His Spirit. This is too little if we do about as we please. We still have to learn somehow that it is not a once-for-all act, but a life of submission to God and to “one another in the fear of God” before the terms, “born again,” “sanctified,” “filled with the Spirit,” etc. can mean very much to us as spiritual experience.

There will be no surmisers in Heaven. “There shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie; but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life” (Revelation 21:27).”

ALL

This is the true ekklesia, orchestrated by the Holy Spirit, where the spiritual gifts were in operation within the Body of Christ. I can find no place in scripture where they were ever done away with as some suppose.
1 Corinthians 14:26
26 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.”

No Fellowship – No Problem!

While I do long for a real time, face to face, breaking bread together, I do have fellowship with other brethren online. Until and if that face to face ekklesia is provided, the All Sufficient One has proven to be more than enough. We must indeed learn to put Jesus first in our lives above all else, even above our own desires.

No Fellowship?  No Problem!
Chip Brogden

You will never truly appreciate or benefit from fellowship until you have learned how to live without it.

There already is a fellowship of saints.  It is a spiritual fellowship, and it is based on Christ having the preeminence – not the fellowship having preeminence.  All this yearning for fellowship and being with others is the result of being hung-over from the religious system.  You’re trying to fill a void that religion used to fill.

The purpose of solitude in the spiritual desert is to get you to see that Jesus is Enough.  You’re not going to die from lack of fellowship, but if you don’t learn that Jesus is Enough then spiritually speaking you’re dead already. He’s the One you need to be focused on – not starting a fellowship, not finding a home group, not making something happen with other people.

And already…
